PHYSICS

Warm welcome to the Department of Physics web pages !!!

Going through these pages you will find a comprehensive details of the courses we offer as well as our research initiatives.

The Department of Physics starts functioning in 2009, in a temporary building at DN-47, Salt Lake, Sector-V which was shifted in 2010 at the Azad Bhavan, Salt lake, Sector-I. Initially the department started with three faculty members, under the careful mentorship of Professor Dilip Kr. Basu, former Professor of Applied Physics, Calcutta University and ex. Vice Chancellor of Tripura and Burdawn University, guest lecturers Prof. Santidev Ghosh retired from Rahara Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College and Dr. Amitava Pal retired from City College, Kolkata. In 11th November 2014, the department was permanently moved to the present campus at Newtown. At present the department has strength of 8 vibrant faculty members (1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors and 5 Assistant Professors), 2 non-teaching technical staffs, 1 Group-C staff and around 20 research scholars. Thrust areas in teaching and researchof the Department spans over Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Nuclear Physics and Nulcear-Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Material Physics, Nano-Science, Mathematical Physics, General Theory of Relativity and Astrophysics, Foundations of Quantum Mechanics etc. Many of the faculty members have received national and international recognition for their research work in various exciting fields of present interest. The faculty members of the department activly participates in various national and international research initiatives, various conferences, seminars, meetings etc. regularly. Moreover, Department already hosted few seminars/conferences and recently hosted two-day introductory workshop on astophysics and cosmology in collaboration with the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics ( IUCAA), Pune, India.

Apart from our Laboratories designed for graduate courses, department offers advanced laboratories like Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) system and Spin coater unit to prepare organic ultra-thin film, Semiconductor Thin film deposition using Cyclic Voltametry technique, Synthesis of metal-oxide thin film by chemical bath deposition, Dielectric measuements by impedence analyser, Coherent Laser spectroscopy in atomic Rubidium vapour using external cavity diode laser (ECDL) etc. to our final year graduate students for project work as well as for our reaserch students. Department also offers High performence computing facility for doing precise theoretical estimations.
